We’re getting ready for ski season this year with a few suggestions for ski bindings with technology or reputations specifically built around injury prevention. With the right mindset, training, skill, and gear a prudent skier can dramatically decrease their risk of injury on the slopes. That being said, no skier of any skill level is immune to injury so stay tuned for future articles on injury prevention.
As skiers it is crucial to understand our skill level, assess the terrain we will be skiing, and consider current snow conditions before we attempt any given run. On top of this, following the skiers responsibility code is crucial in fostering intelligent and prudent skiing.
Most statistics agree that knee related ACL and MCL (ligaments in and around the knee) account for 30-40% of all skiing related injuries. While equipment and knowledge has improved dramatically around leg injury prevention in skiing, there are still some “blind” spots.
